Crispy Cinnamon Crumble with Blackberries

August 2, 2014 by Cris 2 Comments

This crumble is so healthy and awesome as it’s made of rolled oats, seeds (chia seeds and flax seeds), blackberries, Greek yoghurt and dark chocolate. It’ really one of those strange recipes that simply works – the blackberries soften and sweeten while the oatmeal combined with dark chocolate go hand in hand.

Crispy Cinnamon Crumble with Blackberries
I chose to use blackberries in my recipe for today as they are making their way into all the grocery shops and local farmer’s markets. Besides that, fresh blackberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is a powerful natural antioxidant. Blackberries are loaded with vitamins (they contain also vitamins A, E and K), minerals and dietary fibers – essential for an optimum health.

The amazing thing about crumble is that you can have it at any time of the day. This time I chose crumble is to use rolled oats, chia and flax seeds, fresh blackberries, and dark chocolate.  I prefer to have mine in the morning along with Greek yoghurt and extra fresh berries (blueberries and strawberries) on top.

Dark chocolate is also packed with nutrients that can positively affect your health, being especially protective against cardiovascular disease if it’s consumed in moderation (1 or 2 squares a day). It is rich in antioxidants, fiber, iron, magnesium and a few other minerals – so good for your brain functions, skin, etc. Make sure you buy dark chocolate with 70% or higher cocoa content. Avoid milk chocolate, which is full of added sugar.

Serve the crumble with an extra scoop of yoghurt for your breakfast routine or along with your choice of ice cream as a dessert at any moment. It can also be refrigerated up to 4 days.

Prep time: 3 mins
Cook time: 40 mins
Total time: 43 mins
Serves: 6
Ingredients
  • 300g rolled oats
  • 100g whole-wheat flour
  • a handful of chia seeds
  • a handful of flax seeds
  • 1/4 cup almonds, cut in halves
  • half of a dark chocolate (up to 90%), cut
  • 1 stick of cinnamon, grated
  • 2 handfuls of fresh blackberries
  • 1 pinch of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of raw honey
  • 3 spoons of greek yoghurt
  • a tablespoon of peanut butter
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 250°C (~480°F) and lightly grease a 9×9 inch-square baking dish with peanut butter.
  2. Mix the rolled oats, whole-wheat flour, almonds, chia seeds, flax seeds, yoghurt and dark chocolate, honey and baking soda thoroughly in a bowl. Pour the crumble filling evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Rinse the blackberries very well and place them in the crumble filling. Grate a little bit of dark chocolate and sprinkle the cinnamon over it. Lower the temperature to 180°C (~350°F) and bake for about 40 mins until the crumble is browned and firm. I would highly recommend to try it before serving it. It might take you less or more time depending of which type of oven you’ve got.
Notes
MAKE IT VEGAN: Use maple syrup instead and skip the Greek yoghurt.[br][br]Get creative, use the ingredients you have at hand and stay healthy! Make sure you only “cook it fit”.
