I decided to write this post because, over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed an interesting pattern: whenever I share with someone that I’ve chosen to go alcohol-free for a few months, about half of the people raise questions like, “Why would you do that? You weren’t drinking much anyway!”
It’s true—I wasn’t a heavy drinker. On average, I’d have maybe three drinks a week, and during social events, that number could climb. But even as a sporadic drinker, I felt compelled to make this change. Why? Because alcohol has become so normalized in our culture that it’s often embraced as a harmless or even positive habit. Yet the more I reflect on it, the more I realize that alcohol’s impact on our bodies and minds is far from harmless. In fact, the consequences are often underestimated and out of proportion to the benefits we think it provides.

So, as part of my preparation for the Paris Marathon in April and my commitment to living my healthiest life in my mid-40s, I decided to go alcohol-free at the beginning of the year.
Now, just one and a half months into this journey, I’m already seeing incredible benefits—and I’m excited to share them with you.
#1 A Surge in Energy Levels
One of the first things I noticed after cutting out alcohol was how much more energy I had. Without alcohol disrupting my sleep or draining my body’s resources, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle each day. This newfound energy has been a game-changer for my marathon training—I can push myself harder during runs and recover faster afterward.
#2 Glowing Skin and Improved Texture
As a woman in my mid-40s, skin health is something I pay close attention to. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and can accelerate aging, but since going alcohol-free, my complexion has transformed. My skin feels smoother, looks brighter, and has a natural glow.
#3 Hormonal Balance
This benefit was unexpected but so welcome! In our 40s, hormonal regulation becomes increasingly important—especially for women. Alcohol can disrupt hormone levels and exacerbate symptoms like mood swings or fatigue. By eliminating it from my life, I’ve noticed greater hormonal stability and an overall sense of balance throughout the day.
#4 Better Sleep = Better Everything
I used to think I was sleeping well enough—but now I realize how much alcohol was interfering with my rest. Even one or two drinks can disrupt REM sleep, leaving you feeling groggy the next day. Now that I’m alcohol-free, my sleep is deeper and more restorative. This has had a ripple effect on every aspect of my life: better focus, improved mood, and more stamina during workouts.
#5 Mental Clarity and Emotional Resilience
One of the most empowering changes has been how sharp and emotionally balanced I feel throughout the day. Alcohol can cloud judgment and amplify stress or anxiety over time—even if you’re not drinking heavily. Without it in my system, I feel calmer, more focused, and better equipped to handle whatever life throws at me.
#6 Faster Recovery from Training
Marathon training is no joke—it’s physically demanding and requires your body to recover quickly between sessions. Alcohol slows down muscle repair by increasing inflammation in the body. Since cutting it out, my recovery times have improved dramatically; I feel stronger after each run instead of worn down.
#7 Weight Management Without Extra Effort
Alcohol is full of empty calories—and let’s not forget how it often leads to late-night snacking! By removing it from your diet, maintaining a healthy weight will become much easier without having to make drastic changes elsewhere.
#8 A Sense of Empowerment
Perhaps one of the most unexpected benefits is how empowered this decision makes me feel. The simple act of deciding not to drink—and sticking with it—has given me so much confidence in my ability to make choices that align with my goals. It’s a reminder that we have control over our habits and our lives.
Looking Ahead
This journey has been nothing short of transformative so far, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next. As we approach mid-April and race day for the Paris Marathon (which is coming up fast!), I plan to share another update on how going alcohol-free continues to impact my training and overall well-being.
If you’ve ever considered taking a break from alcohol—even if you’re just a casual drinker like me—I encourage you to give it a try! You might be surprised by how much better you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally when you step away from something we’ve been conditioned to see as “normal.”
For now, I’m thrilled with how this decision has positively impacted my life—and excited for what’s still ahead on this journey!
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to race day.
Stay healthy and be happy,
Cris
