I used to believe tranquility was something that happened to other people, not someone like me with a chaotic schedule and restless mind. That was until yoga entered my life, becoming an unexpected sanctuary that offered not just physical benefits, but also mental and emotional well-being.
It all began in 2018 when I met Sheela at my previous job. From the moment our eyes met, I felt an inexplicable connection. Sheela radiated an energy that was so different from my own, yet strangely familiar. As we chatted over coffee breaks and lunch hours, I discovered a kindred spirit who shared my longing for deeper understanding and holistic well-being.
Sheela’s passion for yoga was infectious. She spoke about it with such enthusiasm that I couldn’t help but be intrigued. When she invited me to one of her classes, I hesitated at first. Me, doing yoga? I could barely touch my toes! But something in Sheela’s gentle encouragement made me take that first step onto the mat.

That decision changed everything. As I stumbled through those first awkward poses, I felt a spark ignite within me. It wasn’t just about the physical practice; it was a journey of self-discovery. Through Sheela’s guidance, I began to understand the power of mindfulness and the profound connection between body and mind.
Now, seven years later, I find myself reflecting on how far I’ve come. Yoga and meditation have become my anchors in this chaotic world, helping me navigate life’s ups and downs with a newfound sense of inner peace. My bond with Sheela has only deepened over time, evolving into a beautiful friendship rooted in our shared passion for holistic living.
As I sit across from Sheela, ready to delve into a conversation about the transformative power of mindful yoga, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This remarkable woman not only introduced me to yoga but also opened the door to a more balanced, mindful way of living. And for that, I will be forever thankful.

Here’s our conversation about the benefits of practicing mindful yoga regularly:
Cris: Sheela, when did you take up yoga, and what role does it play in your life?
Sheela: I started my yoga journey 20 years ago. At that time, I was constantly on the move, running, going to the gym, and trying many class I could find, from Thai boxing and to spinning, Pilates, and forest jogging. Balancing a demanding workload and frequent work travels was always a challenge. And as life teaches us, if we don’t listen to our body, mind, and heart, we will eventually receive the lessons we need.
For me, those lessons came in the form of food and skin allergies, followed by a severe herniated disc that forced me to slow down. With the support of my husband, an incredible osteopath, and holistic Asian treatments, I began my healing journey. Around the same time, a newly opened Anusara Yoga studio just five minutes from my home became a sanctuary for me. Slowly, my body and mind found balance again, and life blessed me with pregnancy – an experience that changed everything.
The level of healing I experienced was profound. I blossomed from the inside out. I practiced yoga throughout my pregnancy and, six months after giving birth, began my Yoga Teacher Training. This was just the beginning. I went on to train in Kids Yoga, Yin Yoga, Thai Vedic Yoga, Meditation, Yoga Nidra, and Thai Yoga, while teaching numerous classes, workshops, and retreats.
Yoga became more than just a practice—it became a healing constant in my life, a daily ritual that continues to nourish and transform me.
Cris: I’ve been fortunate to practice yoga through your lessons and on my own. However, I’m aware of how costly yoga sessions can be. What recommendations do you have for people who can’t afford yoga studios but would like to start, especially since yoga isn’t as easy to begin independently as something like running?
Sheela: Yoga studios have exploded in popularity over the last decades, turning into a thriving industry. With countless options available, from flat-rate memberships to personal training. there is always a way to start your yoga journey.
The key is to find the right teacher, someone whose guidance resonates with you and supports your practice in an aligned way. If cost is a barrier, don’t hesitate to talk to the teacher. Bring a friend and ask for a discount, or offer your skills, services, or connections in exchange. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way.
Cris: How do you think mindful yoga and meditation contribute to a holistic health approach, especially in our stress-filled, busy lives?
Sheela: Mindful Yoga and Meditation are powerful tools to help you find balance and establish a rhythm that supports your well-being. But what does holistic health truly mean? It means nourishing your body with the right foods for your unique constitution, practicing yoga to improve posture, build strength, and open your heart, and cultivating mental and emotional resilience through mindfulness.
Our lifestyle has changed radically—life moves faster, we are constantly connected, influenced by social media, global crises, and rising violence. Yet, more and more people are seeking a way back to mindful living.
A holistic lifestyle is not something external, it is something you cultivate from within. Through meditation, we find inner joy and peace. Through conscious routines for body, mind, and soul, we create habits that manifest well-being over time. This doesn’t mean life becomes stress-free, but rather that we learn to navigate challenges with strength, grace, and kindness.
Cris: Can you share some simple mindfulness techniques that people can incorporate into their daily routines, even if they’re not practicing yoga regularly?
Sheela: Go into the forest and disconnect—switch off your phone and simply observe. Look at the trees, feel their presence, and see if they have a message for you.
Lie down, wrap yourself in a blanket, and listen to mindful music. Close your eyes or use an eye pillow to deepen your relaxation.
Even on busy days, seek out small mindful moments. If a cozy café crosses your path, take a seat, pause, and just be. After work, take the scenic route home—walk through a park, breathe deeply, and let nature ground you.
At home, create an evening ritual: cleanse your face mindfully, sip a cup of calming tea, and embrace stillness. I swear by power naps, just 10 minutes can work wonders.
Treat yourself with kindness, and the world around you will reflect it back.
Cris: Many people struggle with consistency in their yoga practice. What advice do you have for maintaining a regular yoga routine?
Sheela: Don’t overdo it – find your own rhythm. Explore what works best for you: morning or evening yoga, 10 minutes a day or a longer session once a week. Whether it’s Anusara, Yin, or another style, experiment and discover what truly resonates with you.
Try different teachers until you find the one who inspires and supports you. Yoga is not just another workout—it’s a journey of self-discovery, self-expression, and self-care, all in one. And isn’t that amazing?
Cris: How has teaching yoga impacted your own life and perspective?
Sheela: Teaching yoga has profoundly impacted me, shaping my personal growth and allowing me to step into my authentic self. It’s not just a role or a job title – it’s a part of who I am. Through teaching, I have found myself.
I am deeply grateful for the moments when I see my students after class, radiating peace and happiness, or when personal yoga students experience healing from pain. It is truly a gift.
We all have the ability to blossom when we embrace our authentic selves, contributing to our community, society, and the world around us. Balancing my professional career with teaching yoga hasn’t always been easy, but it has shown me that both are possible, when we follow our passion, we find the way.
Cris: What would you say to someone who’s skeptical about the benefits of yoga and meditation?
Sheela: They never truly gave it a chance—and that’s okay. Not everyone needs to practice yoga, and we must honor that. However, I believe it takes courage to move beyond skepticism and break free from patterns that keep those from opening up. True acceptance means respecting each person’s unique path and preferences.
Yoga is an ancient holistic healing practice, and it’s never too late to begin. It can become a lifelong guide helping you overcome, explore, accept, and celebrate the many layers of life. Through yoga, you nurture your body, mind, and heart, finding balance and connection along the way. I am deeply grateful for yoga in my life and for the opportunity to share its beauty through my classes. I hope to inspire others to embark on their own journey of self-care and self-discovery. We have only one life, a precious gift and it is up to us to live it mindfully.
